One of the most widely used misconception is that you need to medicate your tank every time one of your fish gets sick , this thought would be false . I’ll tell you right now that I’ve been told by my LFS aquarium specialist that the only ailment that he recommended ever medicating was HOLE IN THE HEAD . This coming from a man highly educated in the inner workings of aquarium chemistry . Upon being shocked that he would say such a thing in a pet store , that makes money off of selling medication for fish disease , I listened carefully as he told me that medication may very well save your fish , this time , even next time , but you and your fish aren’t gaining anything from this cycle . By medicating your fish in it’s home , you are destroying those important good guy bacteria’s , as most fish medications are anti-bacterial medicine . Medicine works in fish the same way that medicine works in people , the more you use it the less it’ll work , plus the fishes immune system will stop working at fixing it’s own problems . Plus , more often that not , your fish is sick , because you the user , didn’t do an aspect of your job right! Either of these are the most common reasons your fish get sick:

Problem

A. you didn’t cycle your tank /

FIX: cycle your tank properly

B. your levels get out of control /

FIX: clean your tank more frequently

C. your new arrivals spread disease /

FIX: quarantine all new arrivals for at least a week

D. you’ve destroyed your biological bed/

FIX: stop medicating your tank / use hospital tank if must

E. you’re overfeeding /

FIX: stop it , know how much your fish eat , and are eating

F. you’ve got a disease that you don’t know/

FIX: perform non medicated procedure (NMP)

G. you got ick in coldwater /

FIX: raise temp by five degrees perform (NMP)

H. you got ick in warm water /

FIX: what the hell did you do ? perform (NMP)

Now , upon learning all of this , I’ve also learned that the best way to fix any problem is to follow this Non Medicated Procedure for cleaning out your tank of disease .

A. siphon 25% of your tank / add clean dechlorinated water with 1 tbsp of aquarium salt for every ten gallons of your whole tank . Raise temperature 5 degrees .

B. 2 days later siphon 15% of your tank / add clean dechlorinated water with 1 tbsp of aquarium salt for every 20 gallons of your whole tank . Maintain raised temperature .

C. three days later and every other third day siphon 10% of water from your tank / add clean dechlorinated water with no salt , until fish are well again . Maintain temperature until problem fixed.

I’ve been using this for years and it has never failed me , even the dreaded DROPSY stands no chance against this simple procedure . At this point I don’t even have to care what my fish have , I just follow procedure and voila! …fixed.

As I mentioned earlier , the only disease I’ve been recommended to medicate , was hole in the head .

I hope this information has helped any of you , and I hope you to will come to a day where you can feel confident enough to through away all your expensive medications ….it felt good not being a slave to those fish medication companies that know this information no longer , and I hope the same to you .
